Sailing the Mythical Waters of Agios Nikolaos Crete

As Poseidon himself might attest, sailing around Agios Nikolaos in Crete Greece is nothing short of divine. This coastal gem, nestled on the eastern side of Crete, offers a sailing experience that would make even the most seasoned Argonaut jealous. From the moment you set sail in these azure waters, you’ll understand why Zeus chose to be born on this island (or so the legends say). The coastline of Agios Nikolaos Town unfolds like a scroll of ancient Greek poetry, revealing hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and beaches that would tempt any siren.

Agios Nicolaos Anchorages Overview

Agios Nikolaos Marina

Marina
This is what sailors experienced: The marina itself is wonderful, with lovely staff. A true gem in Greece. However, be warned: the Customs office in Agios Nikolaos is notorious for being overly demanding and difficult to deal with. Despite having all the necessary paperwork in order, we were subjected to seventeen visits and still fined. The marina itself is unfortunately filled with seized yachts and people facing fines and delays due to the Customs office’s aggressive approach. The Port Police, on the other hand, were helpful and professional. Stay safe!

Almyros Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This secluded cove offers a perfect day trip. While the sandy bottom is interspersed with seagrass, the crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming to the stunning beach nearby. Alternatively, dinghy in and utilize the dedicated moorings.

Paralia Agiou Panteleimonos

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This well-protected anchorage offers ample space for your vessel, with 20m of chain on 5m of sand. Enjoy the peace and quiet, just a short 200m distance from the beautiful beach.

Istron Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is best suited for good weather conditions or with a southerly wind. It offers a sandy bottom with depths ranging from 4-6m, but be aware of some rocky patches beyond that.

Pseira Island

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage provides a decent holding in 16m of sand, with the added security of two moorings on land. While the daytime conditions with a North-West wind of 10-15 knots and 0.5m waves are manageable, be prepared for a bit of roll. The wind typically drops in the evening and shifts to the South-West and eventually South overnight, which might create additional movement in the anchorage.

Mochlos Crete

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This incredible archaeological site on Mochlos Island offers a glimpse into the fascinating Minoan civilization. Located just 100m from the coastal town of Mochlos, it was once connected to mainland Crete before the sea level rose. Explore the remnants of this ancient culture and marvel at the captivating story of its connection to the sea.

Paralia Richti

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This snug mooring nestled amongst the rocks offers a peaceful retreat. Be mindful of the nearby rocky shoreline and avoid getting too close to the beach to prevent any potential damage to your vessel.

Ormos Trachyli

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This spot offers a pleasant anchorage, but keep a watchful eye out for rocks. Lots of fish.

Dianiskari Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This cove is a great spot for a swim with its clear, inviting waters. However, be aware that even with a North-West wind, a swell can roll in. When anchoring, aim for 10m of depth on the sand and use at least 45m of chain. It might take a few meters of chain to find a good grip in the sand.

Vayu Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage, with its mix of sand and rock, offers a secure spot with enough chain to ensure a good grip. The crystal-clear water and stunning beach make it a perfect place to enjoy a relaxing stay.

Ekklisia Agios Fokas

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage provides excellent holding in 9m of sand. To counteract the swell entering through the northern entrance of the inlet, we found it helpful to take lines ashore to align with the wave direction.

Fede's Bay

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This picturesque bay boasts clear waters and a sandy bottom interspersed with patches of seagrass, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and enjoying a leisurely lunch. On a calm day, you can easily drop anchor, as it sinks quickly into the sand. We used 30m of chain for a depth of 7m, ensuring a secure hold.

Spinalonga Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a truly unique and memorable experience. While it’s best to arrive early in the morning before the crowds, the 4m deep, greenish waters and the boats passing through to the Le Preuserie (well worth a visit!) make it a special place. It’s known as the “Island of the Forgotten,” a site that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits. Don’t miss the chance to explore this intriguing place; it opens at 8:30 am.

Vathi Beach / Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This picturesque bay offers excellent protection and stunning beauty. While the sonar charts might be a bit off, the anchor held perfectly in the predominantly muddy bottom. In fact, it dug in so deeply that I had difficulty lifting it!

Marina Elouda

Marina
This is what sailors experienced: While the port itself is inaccessible to sailboats due to limited space and heavy use by locals and excursion boats for Spinalonga, it’s very easy to access by dinghy. You’ll find excellent anchoring opportunities in the immediate vicinity of the port.
