This is what sailors experienced:
This sheltered anchorage offers a comfortable one-night stopover, protected from strong northwest winds. While the bottom is a mix of sand and rocks, the protection it provides makes it a worthwhile stop. However, accessing the anchorage can be challenging.

This is what sailors experienced:
This harbour entrance has rocks that require careful navigation. I managed to find a spot at the very end of the quay with a mooring line. It’s incredibly shallow, even with my 1.60m draft, my sonar (calibrated at 2m) was reading 0m. Despite the shallowness, it was a pleasant stay during the day. However, the nighttime proved less peaceful.

When it comes to docking your vessel, Heraklion’s marinas and ports are so welcoming, you’d think Hephaestus himself had forged them from the fires of hospitality. The main port of Heraklion stands as a modern-day labyrinth of nautical delights, offering all the amenities a discerning sailor could desire. From the historic Venetian harbour to the state-of-the-art marina facilities, you’ll find berths so comfortable, you might just forget to set sail again. Just be wary of any suspicious maze-like structures – we hear the Minotaur is still looking for a new home!
If dropping anchor is more your style, Heraklion's coastline is dotted with secluded bays and golden beaches that would make Aphrodite herself green with envy. From the picturesque Matala Beach, where Zeus once swam ashore disguised as a bull (talk about a beach bod!), to the tranquil waters of Agia Pelagia, you'll find no shortage of spots to rest your keel. Just remember, if you hear sirens singing, it's probably just a local taverna's karaoke night – best to steer clear anyway!
Beyond its maritime marvels, Heraklion is a city where history and modernity dance a syrtaki in perfect harmony. Stroll through the old town, where Venetian fountains whisper secrets of conquests past, or visit the Palace of Knossos, where you can almost hear the echoes of Minos shouting, "Who left this labyrinth lying around?" With its vibrant markets, world-class museums, and tavernas serving ambrosia disguised as local cuisine, Heraklion offers a feast for all senses. Just don't be surprised if your visit extends longer than Odysseus' journey – the charms of this Cretan capital have a way of making time stand still.
