Sailing the Greek Island Sikinos: A Skipper's Guide

Ah, Sikinos, a hidden gem of the Cyclades Archipelago, untouched by the crowds, and as wild and untamed as the mythical creatures that once roamed its hills. Imagine, if you will, the winds whispering ancient secrets through the valleys, the sun painting the cliffs in shades of gold, and the sea, a vast canvas of turquoise and sapphire, beckoning you to explore. This is Sikinos, a place where time moves at a slower pace, where the only rush you’ll feel is the thrill of the wind in your sails, and the gentle sway of your boat as you discover its hidden coves.

Sikinos Island Anchorages Overview

Ads

Paralia Malta

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is only suitable for a quick swim stop unless the wind and waves are exceptionally calm. We found the conditions too uncomfortable and ultimately anchored in Kolitsani/Ios, 5 miles away.

Paralia Agios Georgios

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: The anchorage looks appealing, but it is quite small. There are two bollards on the northeast side. We decided against anchoring there with our slow monohull because the maneuver felt too risky given the gusty conditions and limited space.

Sikinos Port

Marina

This is what sailors experienced:
We anchored at the harbour entrance in 4m of water with 30m of chain, even with 33 knots of meltemi wind. Holding was excellent. Ferries pass very close, within 50m of our stern, making it impossible to anchor another boat behind us. The tender can be easily launched and left at the dock without any issues.

St. Nickolas Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This small anchorage offers excellent protection from south-southwest swell, accommodating only 2-3 sailboats. Be mindful of a small reef to the west, as well as a submarine electric cable further west (its departure from the coast is clearly visible). The bottom is sandy with some Posidonia, ranging from 7-10 meters in the center and over 10 meters in the east.

St. Nickolas Southern Bay

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This anchorage offers a nice alternative to the crowded harbour, while still being a short dinghy ride away. Great snorkeling can be enjoyed here. Be sure to visit with northern winds, as it is exposed to swell from all directions except the northwest. Double-check your anchor placement as there is plenty of sand for good holding if you’re in the right spot. Note that the depths shown are inaccurate – it’s deeper than the charts indicate (I anchored in 9 meters).

Sikinos Southern Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: Our 50-foot boat found refuge from the Meltemi here. While there were 40 knots outside the bay, inside we experienced 15-20 knots with gusts. The bottom is a mix of rocks, grass, and sand patches. We set two anchors due to the Meltemi and spent a comfortable night. The swell generated by passing ferries was minimal, no more than 30-50 cm.
