Alonnisos Greece: Where the Gods Sail with You

Alonnisos, a gem nestled in the Aegean, is more than just an island, it’s a siren song beckoning sailors to explore its sapphire waters. Legend whispers that the nymph Alonis herself, daughter of Poseidon, charmed this land into existence. Sailing around Alonnisos is a journey into ancient myths, shimmering turquoise waters, and sun-drenched coves. Here, you can sail past the legendary “Island of the Cyclops” and even spot playful dolphins leaping alongside your vessel. You’ll find yourself captivated by the island’s dramatic beauty, a tapestry woven from lush green hillsides, charming villages, and pristine beaches.

Patitiri Alonnisos Port

Marina
This is what sailors experienced: This port offers a secure haven with good holding, thanks to the anchor and ample chain. The steep sides of the port and surrounding houses effectively block any wind, creating a calm and sheltered environment. However, be aware of the swell that enters the port from the southwest, which can cause some tugging on your lines. While manageable, it’s something to be mindful of. Overall, this is a practical spot to seek refuge, especially when the weather turns rough.

Patitiri Anchorage

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This anchorage is truly breathtaking, offering one of the most beautiful moorings we encountered on our trip. The steep wall in the southern part of the harbour basin provides a stunning backdrop, with the shore lined with rocky outcrops. While the anchor alone had a difficult time holding on the seagrass, the presence of mooring blocks and a chain about 50 meters offshore at 5 meters depth provided a secure solution. We utilized this advantage, diving to attach a line to the chain for extra security, ensuring we lay absolutely safe.

Paralia Vithisma

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This secluded beach offers a perfect escape for those seeking complete solitude. On our visit, even during the peak season of August 15th, we found only seven people and a single speedboat. It’s truly a haven for those who appreciate quietude and uncrowded spaces. Just remember to be mindful of the rocky outcroppings in the middle of the bay, which sit just two meters below the surface. A little caution is all it takes to fully enjoy this serene spot.

Paralia Megalos Mourtias

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: While the mask doesn’t reveal the underwater cables, you’ll only see degraded sand. Don’t let the signs deter you, though, as the sand continues westward. Near the tavern jetty, be extra cautious; a large anchor lies at a depth of 7-8 meters, serving as a mooring point.

Paralia Mikros Mourtias

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is best suited for calm weather conditions. The bottom is rocky with posidonia, so finding a secure hold can be tricky. While there are clear areas composed of rocks, a sandy patch at 3 meters deep near the beach may offer a more reliable anchoring spot.

Paralia Mikros Mourtias West

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage offers decent protection in light winds, but it’s a snug fit, with room for just one or two boats. You’ll need to get close to shore and find a sandy spot for a secure anchor. We found that the wind shifted direction while we were anchored, forcing us to reposition in the center with minimal chain to minimize the turning radius.

Paralia Vrisista

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay offers a sandy bottom at the end, with a depth of about 3 meters. It’s a good option for anchoring.

Paralia Giala

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: Very picturesque bay with windmill. From two-thirds of the bay begins sand depth from 10 meters to decreasing. Give top to will hold east side.

Tsoukalia Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay is a great choice for anchoring when the winds are coming from the east. It can comfortably accommodate one or two boats at anchor, but any more than that would require landlines. Be mindful of the rocks on the northern side of the bay, as there might be submerged rocks nearby. It’s best to avoid anchoring too close to these visible rocks to be safe.

Tourkoneri Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is a gem in calm weather, providing a peaceful overnight stay. We secured our boat with lines ashore and dropped anchor in about 7-8 meters of depth. While it offers a tranquil respite, it lacks any facilities. Keep in mind that the typical summer wind can make this spot less appealing for a longer stay, as this side of Alonnisos is more exposed to wave swell compared to the other side.
