Kastos Harbour

The harbour was buzzing with activity, so many boats had gathered that one could practically hop from deck to deck! Despite the jovial chaos, the atmosphere was truly enchanting. We enjoyed a delightful aperitif at the charming mill overlooking the harbour, followed by a delicious dinner at the local taverna, savoring the fresh flavors of the island. And to top it all off, the water in the harbour was so remarkably clear that one could indulge in a refreshing swim right there, surrounded by the gentle lull of the sea and the twinkling lights of the boats.

Nisaki Sarakiniko

This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage offers a secure haven for your vessel, providing peace of mind as you rest from your nautical adventures. While the surrounding area may bear witness to some ongoing construction, rest assured that the holding is good and your boat will be safe. The sandy seabed, though occasionally concealed beneath a layer of marine flora, ensures secure anchoring. Should you venture ashore, a short and pleasant stroll will lead you to a quaint little town, where you can experience the authentic charm of island life.

Southern Anchorage (Opt. 1)

This is what sailors experienced:
Tucked away from the open sea, this exquisite bay offers a haven of tranquility for a select few. With space for only four or five boats, it exudes an air of exclusivity and serenity. Securing your vessel is a breeze, thanks to the readily available stern lines ashore. Drop anchor in the heart of the bay, maintaining a distance of 8-10m from the shoreline, and settle into a depth of 5-7m. Letting out 40-45m of chain will ensure a secure hold.

Southern Anchorage (Opt. 2)

This is what sailors experienced: This secluded bay became our private paradise, offering stunning views and a front-row seat to a breathtaking sunset. We even spotted a few curious goats grazing on the shore, adding a touch of wild charm to the scene. The evening was incredibly calm, allowing us to enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings. While passing ships caused some gentle rocking during the night, this minor inconvenience was easily overshadowed by the beauty and serenity of the bay.

This magnificent anchorage, nestled in the embrace of shallow 8m waters, offers an idyllic escape for seafarers, especially when the northerly winds blow strong. The calm, crystal-clear water teems with fish, creating a mesmerizing underwater spectacle. As the day winds down, witness the enchanting sight of a herd of bell-wearing goats gracefully traversing the beach, their melodic chimes creating a soothing symphony. For provisions and supplies, a convenient store lies just 1.3 nautical miles northeast. As darkness descends, the underwater world comes alive with the allure of the unknown. Large, unidentified fish, long and slender like barracudas, are drawn to the boat’s lights, adding a touch of mystery and excitement to the night.

Paralía Diamá

This is what sailors experienced: This picturesque bay, adorned with olive trees and the occasional glimpse of grazing goats, offers a tranquil escape with a sandy bottom perfect for anchoring. We spent delightful hours exploring the nearby village with our dinghy, discovering the warmth of friendly locals, the culinary delights of an excellent taverna, and the charm of a historic little mill.

Wasp Bay

We anchored securely in 5m of water, our lines tethered to the northwest rocks, ensuring stability with 2m of clearance beneath our hulls. It’s important to note that the bay gradually shallows, reaching less than a meter well before the beach, making it advisable for multihulls to approach only the final sandy section. Numerous monohulls anchored alongside us within a 30m radius, and the northern shore offers ample anchoring space further out, albeit with less protection from southerly winds. Superb swimming & snorkeling opportunities along the rocky edges.

Eastern Anchorage (Opt.1)

This is what sailors experienced:
We dropped anchor in the southwest corner of this picturesque bay, settling in front of the small beach with ample chain in 8m of water. The presence of Posidonia seagrass ensured excellent holding, and we added two lines to the beach for extra security.

Eastern Anchorage (Opt.2)

This is what sailors experienced: After exploring the outer reaches of the bay, we stumbled upon a large patch of sand, perfect for anchoring. We skillfully reversed our vessel towards the southern wall and secured it with a line to the shoreline. The crystal-clear water beckoned us for a refreshing swim, and the small beach provided access to a road, inviting us for a scenic walk or run amidst the captivating landscape.

Fokotrypa Cave

This is what sailors experienced: Accessible only by sea, this intriguing cave lies near the charming Agios Emilianos church and its namesake beach, renowned as one of Kastos’ most beautiful stretches of shoreline. Venture into its depths, and if darkness doesn’t deter you, swim through the cave’s passage to emerge onto a secluded beach. Legend has it that this cave once served as a refuge for the Mediterranean monk seal, hence its evocative name, the “Seal Hole”, adding a touch of mystery and natural history to its allure.

NE Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced: We anchored 40 meters from the beach, facing a 15-knot southwesterly wind. Although the forecast predicted a decrease in wind speed, it remained consistently between 10 to 15 knots throughout the night, resulting in a rather uncomfortable experience. The bay was shared with three other boats, two of which were wisely positioned stern-to on the beach, enjoying a much more peaceful night.

Greenwell Bay

This is what sailors experienced: Located on the eastern side of Kastos, this anchorage offers a breathtaking spectacle as the sun rises over the horizon, bathing the bay in a golden glow. While exposed to the east, it remains a superb spot to drop anchor, even with several boats sharing the space. Ensuring a secure stay requires lines to the shore in addition to your anchor, providing extra stability against any potential wind shifts.
