Sailing the Seas of Syros: Where the Gods Party

This little island might not be as loud as Mykonos or as wild as Ios, but it’s got a charm that’s truly divine. Imagine yourself sailing past the whitewashed houses clinging to the hillsides, the turquoise waters shimmering in the Aegean sun. You’ll find yourself drifting amongst hidden coves and ancient ruins, a true sailor’s paradise. And when the sun dips below the horizon, the island transforms into a tapestry of twinkling lights, reminding you of the celestial beings who once roamed these shores.

Syros Port

Port

This is what sailors experienced:
We stayed in the marina during a windy spell, with 30-knot southwest winds. The waves were whitecaps in the harbour, but only a few were caused by the ferries. Since we were tied to the dock wall, it wasn’t a major concern. The harbour master was incredibly helpful, and for just 11 euros, he even allowed me to use the electricity for free to charge my laptop.

Glysoura Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay is a gem for snorkeling and swimming, with plenty of sandy bottom for easy anchoring. However, be mindful of the swell generated by passing ferries when choosing your anchorage.

Grammata Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage between Mykonos and Kithnos offers a peaceful, secluded escape. We enjoyed a calm night with a light northerly breeze. It’s important to note that the best anchoring is in the sandy area in the center. There are a number of hard, light-colored slabs that can be difficult to spot, especially if you arrive at night.

Americanou Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: In mid-May, with 10-15 knot northeast winds outside and 20 knots inside with gusts (likely katabatic), this anchorage provided good protection from the Meltemi. Holding was good in the sand, but be aware of seagrass.

Megas Lakos Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This charming little bay is a delightful surprise, with a welcoming chorus of goats and the fragrant aroma of wild herbs. The sandy bottom extends all the way in, and while the entrance might look tight, there’s plenty of room – 40 meters on both port and starboard sides. We enjoyed a strong 12-knot northerly wind that shifted a bit, but the boat swung safely. There’s even the option of tying to shore overnight.

Aetos Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This secluded bay offers a stunningly beautiful and remote anchorage. A yacht can anchor in 5 meters as the bay narrows towards the beach. The steep sides and small beach at the end create a truly intimate feel. There’s good holding on sand, but with limited space, it’s really only suitable for one or two boats.

Delfini Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This lovely bay made for a perfect overnight stay. We enjoyed a gentle 10-knot northerly breeze in the evening, which barely registered. The holding was excellent on the sandy bottom. The next morning was blissfully calm, with the bay reflecting the crystal clear water like a mirror. It was the ideal spot for a refreshing morning swim.

Kini Beach

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This is a very pretty little bay with a charming village visible from the anchorage.
However, be aware of a large boulder in the southern part of the bay, which isn’t indicated on the chart. Keri (presumably a local) warns about it.

Galissas Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a beautiful bay with crystal-clear water and excellent holding. One special feature is the designated swimming area that extends across the entire bay, creating a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for everyone.

Finikas Marina

Marina

This is what sailors experienced:
This marina is a really nice and calm spot. The showers are available until 8pm for €2.50, the toilets are clean and open 24 hours, and water is available during the day. Diesel is available on-call. We paid €20 for our 45-foot sailing yacht. The harbour master was very nice and helpful.

Southern Voulgari Anchorage

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: We anchored in the sand at 5 meters, just east of the military zone. We had a peaceful night with plenty of room, and the small port offered a convenient spot to leave our dinghy.

Komito Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay boasts beautiful water and good holding in 7-10 meters of sand mixed with seaweed. However, be prepared for some noise from the water scooters and beach bar music.

SW Bay (Opt.01)

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This cove is a beautiful spot, with wide patches of sand interspersed with banks of Poseidonia. Anchoring is possible at around 10 meters deep. The clear water and vibrant blue hues are truly captivating. We found a flat sea with north winds, making for a pleasant stay.

SW Bay (Opt.02)

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: We anchored in 7 meters of water, using 35 meters of chain. The bottom was a mix of pebbles and sand. We experienced a light northerly wind throughout the night.

Megalos Gialos Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: We found the bay on the right (east) to be more preferable, with fewer swimmers. However, the bottom is quite hard and varied, so be cautious. It’s a pleasant spot overall, but nothing extraordinary.

Chasani Bay

Anchorage

Paralia Varis

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is an excellent anchorage, offering good protection. There’s a small but well-stocked grocery store nearby. However, it’s worth noting that while water is available, the quay isn’t deep enough for sailboats. This means you’ll need a very long hose to reach the water tanks.

Azolimnos Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is a gem – far quieter than the bustling port a few kilometers north. The holding is excellent in the sand, and the village boasts the island’s best coffee, according to locals. We moored in 15-25 knots of SSW wind just outside the beach, and there was no swell at all.

Lazaretta Ermoupolis Marina

Marina

This is what sailors experienced:
This harbour has a special, almost cozy yet slightly abandoned vibe. It’s a good spot with a northerly wind, and it’s definitely the best spot on the windward side. We did experience some swell, though. When we arrived, the harbour was full, but a very friendly German man pointed us to an empty spot: the old fuel station. It’s a great location at the entrance of the harbour, and we felt like harbour masters for the day! We had good shelter, but during the Meltemi, the boat pulled hard on its mooring lines, making for a restless night.

Didimi Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is pleasant in calm weather. There’s occasional swell from passing boats, but nothing serious. The bottom is a mixture of seagrass, rocky patches (that look sandy but don’t provide good anchor hold), and sand. It took two attempts to set our anchor securely.
