Sailing Around Ammouliani: Where Poseidon Plays Hide & Seek

Sailing around Ammouliani, a tiny island jewel nestled in the northern Aegean, is like embarking on a personal odyssey. Here, Poseidon himself seems to have sculpted the coastline with his trident, creating a tapestry of idyllic coves, secluded beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Each bend in the shore reveals a new wonder, a secret cove teeming with marine life or a hidden beach bathed in golden sunlight. As you navigate this enchanting realm, it’s easy to imagine ancient heroes and mythical creatures lurking in the shadows, ready to whisk you away on an adventure worthy of Homer’s epics.

Ammouliani Anchorages Overview

Ammoulliani Port

Port

You can moor here with a draft of about 2.6 meters, even though there’s a shoal marked. The bunker water is a bit of a puzzle, but here’s the deal:
The Source: Water is connected to the tavern above the quay. Make sure it’s turned on!

The Hose Hunt: Connect the blue hose to the black extension hose. The end is underwater in the middle of the quay, secured to a safety line. You’ll have to find it.

Tratovoli Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This little bay is a real find! We dropped anchor in 5 meters of sand, and the holding was excellent. It’s a great spot for seeking shelter from those pesky southerly winds. Just remember to keep an eye out for a shallow area right in front of the bay – you wouldn’t want to get caught out by a hidden sandbar. Enjoy the peace and quiet, and don’t forget to soak up those stunning views!

Réma Island

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This little island is a real find!. Enjoy peace and quiet, great for lunch break!

Karagatsia Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This lovely bay, tucked away from the prevailing wind, is a perfect haven for a night at anchor. Imagine, the gentle lapping of waves against your hull, the scent of salt air, and the soft murmur of families enjoying the beach during the day. It’s a delightful spot, but be warned – it’s a bit cozy, so it’s best for a smaller group of boats. More than four yachts would feel a bit crowded. Anchor in 6-8 meters of sand and enjoy the peace and quiet. It’s a real gem, this little bay!

Kamináki Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: While the little cove just north may be charming, this anchorage offers a bit more elbow room. It’s a comfortable spot to drop anchor, with plenty of space for a few boats. Just be mindful of the rocks on the south side entrance – they’re just above water, so keep a sharp eye out as you approach. Enjoy the extra space and the peaceful setting!

Manganopigado Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This cove is a real charmer, with a lovely beach and a tranquil atmosphere. But be warned, the anchor holding here can be a bit fickle. Even on the hardened sand patches, the anchor doesn’t always dig in as you’d hope. The depth near the beach is about 2 meters, so you might want to look for a different spot if you’re concerned about holding. It’s a beautiful spot, but it’s best to approach with caution!

Alykes Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: While the cove itself might be a bit tricky for anchoring, there’s a great spot tucked away in the very east of the bay. We found excellent holding in about 6 meters of sandy bottom, and the protection from the NE wind was fantastic. No swell at all! If you’re looking for a peaceful and secure anchorage, especially with a NE wind blowing, this spot is a real winner.

Akros Beach

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This bay is a true hidden treasure, especially after the sun sets and you have the place all to yourself. Anchoring is a breeze on the sandy bottom, clearly visible at 6-7 meters. You’ll find a bit of Posidonia around, but it’s not a problem.  The real draw is the stunning rock formations that make this bay so unique. Just be aware that with an east wind, it’s an open bay, so you might want to choose a different spot if the weather isn’t cooperating.

Drenia Island

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: The anchorage itself is quite deep, ranging from 8 to 15 meters, so you’ll need a bit of chain. However, there’s a nice sandy patch on the starboard side of the small island, around 6 meters deep. It might take a bit of searching as there’s seagrass in many places, but it’s worth the effort.

Gaidouronisi Anchorage

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: While Ammouliani boasts charming bays, this anchorage stands out as the only truly protected spot. With an average depth of 2 meters and a sandy bottom, it offers a safe haven for your boat. The other bays on the island are partially open, making this the best choice for overnight stays. The beach is perfect for a barbecue, with no vegetation to worry about, so you can enjoy a carefree meal with your crew. Just remember to keep an eye out for the island’s resident rats! They’re known to be curious creatures, so be sure to keep your boat secure and your food stowed away to prevent unwanted visitors.

Vava Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage offers excellent holding on a sandy bottom, typically in 7-8 meters of water. As is often the case, you’ll need to scout for those sandy patches amidst the weedy stretches. The beach is lovely, with clear water and rocky shores to the south. If you have a good-sized dinghy with a strong engine, it’s an easy trip to the port or even to the southern islands.

Paralia Glastri

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: We found excellent holding in 10 meters of water here, anchoring in light offshore winds. The sand was firm, and we avoided the weedy patches. However, as previous comments suggest, there’s a steep decrease in depth as you get closer to shore. We swung around after putting out 30 meters of chain, and found ourselves with only 2 meters under the keel! So, plan your approach carefully and be mindful of the depth changes. This is a great spot for a peaceful anchorage, but you’ll need to be cautious.

Ouranoupolis Beach South

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
his anchorage offers a peaceful escape, especially if you anchor well away from the shore. You’ll enjoy the quiet and minimize those pesky insects. Just be mindful of the ferry route between the mainland and the island, and avoid the direct path. You might encounter some local boat traffic, including small rental boats, but nothing too bothersome.

While the wind protection is primarily from the northeast, the islands to the west and the shallow bar between the islands and the mainland to the south create a natural barrier, offering good shelter from those directions, especially from the daytime sea breeze and the swell it generates. The water is clean and calm, perfect for swimming and water sports. Enjoy the tranquility, the beautiful views, and the refreshing water!

Ouranoupolis Beach North

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay is a great spot to drop anchor, especially if you’re seeking shelter from northeast winds. While it’s open to the sea, the natural protection from the islands and the depth of the bay (around 5 meters everywhere) provide good protection from swell and wind. You’ll find plenty of room to anchor in the sand, where the holding is excellent. Just avoid the dark areas with posidonia closer to the beach, and watch out for the mooring buoys. Enjoy the spaciousness, the calm waters, and the scenic beauty of this peaceful anchorage.

Anemos Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage offers a fantastic view of the beach, with excellent holding on sand. We dropped anchor in 10 meters, but the bottom rises quickly to just 3 meters, so be mindful of your approach. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, the calm seas, and the ease of getting to shore for a swim or a stroll.
