Sailing Paradise: Agathonisi Island , Where the Gods Still Play

Agathonisi, a tiny jewel in the Dodecanese Islands archipelago, is a sailor’s dream. This island, so small it could fit in your pocket (if your pocket were the size of a small Aegean Sea), offers a taste of paradise. Imagine yourself sailing around this charming isle, the crystal clear waters reflecting the sun like Zeus’s own chariot. With secluded coves, charming tavernas and beaches that would make Aphrodite blush, Agathonisi is a haven for those seeking a truly authentic Greek experience.

Agathonisi Anchorages Overview

Agathonisi Port

Port

This is what sailors experienced:
This anchorage offers decent holding in 2.5m of water, but be mindful of the ferry. They closely monitor the area to ensure no boats block their turning circle. The bay is quite small, limiting available anchoring space. On the plus side, it provides excellent protection from northerly winds.

Paralía Spiliás (Cave Beach)

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This little bay is deluxe! The wind will keep you facing up or down the bay, so you’ll never be bumping into the sides. Go in deep enough to see the sand, then drop your anchor. You’ll be nice and snug in there.

Gaidouralakos Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a real gem! It’s quiet and peaceful, and there’s enough space for a couple of boats. We used a mooring line to a rock to keep from swinging too much in the wind – a good tip if you’re staying for a while.

North Bay Anchorage

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is like a cozy little haven! It’s super protected from wind and waves, and you’ll find good holding in 5-7m of water. You might need to get a bit close to the shore to find a spot, but it’s worth it for the peace and quiet. There’s a tiny dock and a path that leads to the village on the other side of the island, making it easy to explore.

Paralia Vathy Pigadi

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This spot has excellent holding on sand in 4-6m of water. It’s a great shelter from north to south winds, but you’ll want to keep an eye on things if the wind is coming from east to north. And if it’s blowing from south to east, you might need to find a different spot to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Agathonisi Eastern Bay

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:

Wow! This spot is like swimming in a crystal ball! I anchored in 10m with 40m of chain, and the water was so clear I could actually see my anchor and chain. It’s the clearest water I’ve ever seen in the whole Mediterranean!

Tsankari Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay looks incredible, and it’s well-protected from the north wind. Unfortunately, we tried five times to drop anchor, but the bottom is rocky and it just wasn’t possible to find a good spot. Maybe it’s a good place to tie up to a buoy or mooring if there’s one available, but I wouldn’t recommend anchoring here.
