Sail the Turquoise Trails of Kalamos: A Homeric Odyssey Awaits!

Kalamos, the “Island of Reeds,” isn’t just a speck on the map; it’s a mythical paradise tucked away in the Ionian Sea. Legend says Poseidon himself sculpted this island, creating dramatic cliffs that plunge into turquoise waters, secret coves that whisper tales of ancient mariners, and lush hills that echo with the laughter of nymphs. Sailing around Kalamos island is like stepping into an epic poem, where every gust of wind carries the spirit of Odysseus and every wave holds the promise of adventure. So, unfurl your sails, adjust your captain’s hat, and prepare to be enchanted by Kalamos’s siren song!

Kalamos Port

Port

This is what sailors experienced:
Returning to this beautiful spot for the second time, we were met with a rather boisterous welcome. A brisk north-easterly wind, blowing a force 5, greeted us as we entered the harbour. Ever the helpful host, George expertly guided us to our anchor spot. However, the wind persisted throughout the night, reaching force 5-6, creating a symphony of creaking hulls and a rather rolly experience.

Episkopi Marina

Marina

This is what sailors experienced:
Nestled in a quaint village, this small marina offers space for around 10 sailing boats along its quay, with ample depth for a comfortable stay. For those who prefer a little more elbow room, the area outside the harbour provides excellent anchorage for numerous boats to swing freely. Swimmers beware: the harbour waters can be a bit odorous, so anchoring outside is recommended for a more refreshing dip.

Episkopi Trachilos

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This secluded haven offers a slice of paradise for a peaceful lunch break, refreshing swim, or a tranquil overnight stay, provided the weather cooperates. With space for just one boat, it’s the perfect escape from the crowds. We dropped anchor in the sandy bottom at about 7m depth, finding ample swinging room away from the submerged rock. The serenity of the surroundings convinced us to stay the night, enjoying the quiet solitude under the stars.

SW Anchorage

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:

A perfect escape! This idyllic spot proved ideal for a refreshing swim and leisurely lunch break, offering complete solitude as we were the only boat in sight. The seabed drops off quickly, so don’t hesitate to anchor close to the beach for the best experience.

Schinas Bay

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:

A stunning location, we had the entire cove to ourselves for the night. However, the beauty came with a bit of a bumpy ride as we experienced significant swell. Our anchor dragged a bit, but by staying in the middle of the cove with depths ranging from 7-10m, we remained secure.

SE Anchorage

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: A truly superb anchorage! We found ourselves enjoying the tranquility of this secluded spot, with only a handful of other boats opting for the neighboring bay. The sandy/muddy bottom provided excellent holding, allowing us to confidently anchor in 10 meters of water near the tower, even with north-westerly gusts reaching 23 knots. The absence of swell further enhanced the peaceful atmosphere, making this a perfect haven for a relaxing stay.

Porto Leone

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: The anchorage offered good holding, despite experiencing a bit of swinging overnight. We were well protected from any significant swells, making for a relatively comfortable stay. With around 15 other vessels sharing the bay in mid-September, it offered a balance of tranquility and a sense of community.

Agrapidia Beach

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This delightful little bay proved to be a fantastic spot for a refreshing swim. Anchoring in 7m of water over a mix of sand and weed, we were greeted by crystal-clear, blue-green water, far from the rubbish mentioned in previous reviews. A true gem for a peaceful dip and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings.

Mirtia Beach

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
When approaching or navigating the northern part of the beach, be aware of the rocks located approximately 90m from the shore. Take care to avoid this hazard and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Asprogiali Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: When approaching or navigating the northern part of the beach, be aware of the rocks located approximately 100 meters from the shore. Take care to avoid this hazard and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Moorings Fit for Gods & Mortals:
Kalamos Marinas & Ports

The main port of Kalamos, also named Kalamos, offers a safe harbour with basic amenities, like water and fuel. Just across the strait on the mainland, the charming port of Mytikas provides a taste of authentic Greek life with tavernas overflowing with fresh seafood and friendly locals eager to share a glass (or two) of ouzo.
