Kythera Weather
This is what sailors experienced:
The depth here accommodates sailing vessels with a draft of up to 2m, with the water depth measuring at 2.5m. We opted to moor alongside, where access to both water and electricity is available. For those in need of amenities, a short stroll to the mini-market approximately 400m away provides access to essential services, including obtaining a card. Remarkably, mooring is free of charge, and the presence of only a few boats enhances the tranquility of the spot.
This is what sailors experienced:
This spot serves as a viable option when the outer harbour is full. The seabed boasts good quality, providing a comfortable anchorage during calm weather conditions.
Avlemonas (in settled weather), Kapsali (watch for swell), and Diakofti (commercial traffic awareness) are common stops. Choose based on wind direction and expected swell.
Holding is generally good in sand and sand–mud mixes; weed and rock patches exist near edges. Shelter varies—exposed coasts can see swell after strong winds, so check forecasts closely.
Mind ferry lanes near Diakofti, gusts around headlands, and rebound swell near cliffs. Enter bays in good light, keep to charted depths, and allow room for swing.
Provisions and water are more reliable near Chora/Kapsali and Diakofti in season. Plan major fuel/chandlery needs at mainland or larger Ionian hubs before/after Kythira.
Typical NW sea breezes build in the afternoon, with potential acceleration around capes. Swell can persist on exposed bays after a blow—arrive early to choose the best spot.
Kythera boasts a handful of picturesque ports and marinas that serve as welcoming harbours for weary sailors. The main port of Diakofti entices with its quaint charm and sheltered anchorage, while the bustling marina of Agia Pelagia beckons with its vibrant atmosphere and modern facilities. For those seeking a more secluded haven, the serene port of Kapsali offers tranquility amidst stunning natural beauty. Beyond the bustling ports lie a myriad of secluded anchorages and pristine beaches waiting to be discovered.
