Ios Island Anchorages Overview

Ios Marina

Marina
This is what sailors experienced: The marina/town quay was a bit of a squeeze, but we managed to secure a spot on the eastern wall towards the northern side using two lazy lines. It was a tight fit, and we wouldn’t have been able to stay there otherwise.

Koumpara Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: It’s a lovely little cove for a few hours, but the bottom is a bit underwhelming – just grassy sand.

Kampaki Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage offers excellent holding on sand, but be sure to avoid the seagrass patches. We sought shelter from the easterly winds here and enjoyed a leisurely lunch while waiting for the wind to shift to the west. However, there were some trucks moving dirt during the day, which unfortunately resulted in a dust cloud that settled over the boat.

Plakotó Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This beach is absolutely stunning! We had excellent holding on sand at just 5 meters.

Theodoti Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: Anchoring here requires precision. Aim for 6 meters as there’s a lot of seaweed before that and rocks (including some large slabs) after. If you go too shallow, you’ll encounter more seaweed and rocks.

Psathi Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay offers plenty of sandy spots for anchoring, especially on the southern side. The west side is rockier and more appealing for snorkeling. There’s a charming little taverna right on the beach.

Kalamos Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This spot is wonderfully secluded and often has just a few other people around. There’s a smaller cove on the left side, and the crystal clear water offers smooth rocky plaques that are good for snorkeling, even if they are a bit too shallow.

Papa Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: We found great holding in 6 meters of white sand. While snorkeling the anchor, I spotted a few boulders in the water, but they were easily visible. On the right side of the bay, facing the hotel and near the little cave, we noticed a mother chain with 4-5 “children chains” branching off. We suspect these are for buoys during the summer months, but they weren’t visible when we were there.

Treis Klisies Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: We dropped anchor in the northern bay and enjoyed the solitude of being the only boat there. Despite gusty winds from various directions throughout the night, our anchor held firm. The weather-worn stones on land were fascinating, and we even found crystals of different colors.

Magganari Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage offers excellent holding on a sandy bottom and provides shelter from the wind. However, there’s a good amount of swell present. It’s a lovely little bay with sandy beaches and a fantastic restaurant.

Pikri Nero Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a great spot with a soft sandy bottom and strong holding. It’s a beautiful area with access to three small beaches. While not protected from the wind, it does offer shelter from the waves.

Milopotas Beach

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This is a pleasant anchorage with good sand holding at around 6-8m. We spent two nights here with a fairly strong N/NW wind. The anchorage was a bit rolly due to the N/NW swell wrapping around the corner. There’s good dinghy access in the northern corner with a small wall, old steel pegs, and rings.

The Ports of Ios Island: Anchoring in Mythical Waters

When it comes to ports, Ios Island offers a range of options, each with its own charm. The main port, Chora, is a bustling hub with all the amenities you could need, from restaurants and bars to shops and supermarkets. But if you crave something quieter, the smaller port of Gialos offers a peaceful retreat. Here, you can enjoy the tranquility of a traditional Greek village while still being within easy reach of the island’s delights. And for those seeking true solitude, the tiny port of Manganari provides a haven for yachts, a haven for those seeking a retreat from the hustle and bustle.

Io's Hidden Treasures:
Anchoring & Beaches

Beyond the ports, Ios Island is a treasure trove of secluded anchorages and breathtaking beaches. The crystal-clear waters of Mylopotas are perfect for swimming and sunbathing, while the golden sands of Koumbara invite you to relax and unwind. For those seeking adventure, the dramatic cliffs of Psathi offer challenging climbs and stunning views, while the hidden coves of Agia Theodoti beckon with their serene beauty. Remember, though, that even the most secluded beaches on Ios have a touch of the island's vibrant nightlife. So, be prepared to dance under the stars, even if you're just anchoring for a night!

More Than Just Beaches:
Ios Island Greece Beyond the Waves

Beyond the beaches and nightlife, Ios Island has a rich history and culture waiting to be explored. Visit the ancient ruins of Skarkos, a prehistoric settlement, and delve into the myths and legends that have shaped the island. Wander through the whitewashed streets of Chora, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the island's vibrant atmosphere. And of course, no trip to Ios is complete without indulging in the island's delicious cuisine. From fresh seafood to traditional Greek dishes, your taste buds will be tantalized by the flavors of Ios.
