This is what sailors experienced:
This harbour offers excellent holding for your anchor, especially when using at least 50m of chain while backing into the quay. The harbour master was incredibly helpful, even answering the phone directly before our arrival, making the check-in process smooth. The harbour provides good shelter from most winds, offering a peaceful and protected stay.
This is what sailors experienced:
We found perfect calm within the bay itself. We enjoyed a relaxing time swimming, eating, and simply enjoying the peace before continuing on. The buoys marking the boundary line kept us from getting too close to the beautiful sandy and pebbled beach, but we found good holding in 5-6 meters of water. It was a great spot to rest and recharge.
Escape the crowds and discover Kea's hidden treasures by anchoring in one of its many secluded bays. Giali, a long, white-sand beach, is a favorite spot for swimming and snorkeling. For a true Robinson Crusoe experience, venture to the Pounta anchorage, where you can swim in crystal-clear waters and enjoy a picnic on the pristine sand. Otzias, a secluded bay on the island's south coast, is another gem, offering a haven for those seeking tranquility and a taste of unadulterated island life.
Kea Island is much more than just a beautiful backdrop for your sailing adventures. It is a place steeped in history, boasting ancient ruins and intriguing archaeological sites, like the Temple of Artemis at Agia Irini. As you wander through charming villages like Ioulis, with its traditional houses and winding alleyways, you'll encounter a welcoming blend of ancient history and modern hospitality. Don't forget to sample the local delicacies – honey, cheeses, and wine – that reflect the island's rich agricultural heritage. Kea Island is a destination that will leave you wanting to return time and time again.
Stroll Ioulida (Chora) and the Lion of Kea, swim at Koundouros and Otzias, sail Vourkari coves, and hike or boat to ancient Karthea for ruins and a swim.
Frequent ferries from Lavrio to Korissia (about 1 hour). No airport; fly to Athens then transfer to Lavrio. Yachts use Korissia and Vourkari; south and west bays are good in settled weather.
Meltemi (N–NE) accelerates in the Kea channel. Best shelter and services are in Vourkari and Korissia; watch gusts and ferry wash. Holding is sand or mud with weed patches; fuel/water by arrangement at the quay.
Base in Vourkari for dining and boat access, Ioulida for views and quiet lanes, or Koundouros for family-friendly beaches. Weekends are busy—book ahead.
Carry water on hikes and for the Karthea trail; roads are narrow so drive carefully. Avoid anchoring on seagrass and respect archaeological zones and monastery dress codes.
