Sailing Symi in Greece:
A Journey Through the Aegean's Jewel

Prepare to be enchanted! Symi in Greece, a tiny island tucked away in the Dodecanese Islands archipelago, will sweep you off your feet with its picturesque beauty. Forget the hustle and bustle of mainland Greece – here, life moves to the rhythm of the waves and the gentle breeze. Imagine yourself sailing past shimmering coves, exploring hidden beaches, and marvelling at the colourful architecture of Symi’s charming port. This is a sailor’s paradise, where every turn reveals a new treasure, just waiting to be discovered.

Symi Anchorages Overview

Symi Port

Port
This is what sailors experienced: This is a lovely port to moor, with helpful staff on hand to assist. Remember to bring a 20m line, plus a 4m bowline, for attaching to the bow buoy. Also, be sure to give the dock a good berth – the large ferries can create considerable waves, and you wouldn’t want to risk bumping into the dock!

Symi North Bay

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This beautiful bay, open to the east, offers a picturesque anchorage. Since our arrival, we’ve experienced mostly westerly winds. We dropped anchor in 7m near the small restaurant with its convenient pontoon for tying off. The dinghy is docked on the quay at the harbour’s end, right next to the customs dock.

Emporios Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: The town is easily accessible with a dinghy, and there’s ample mooring space available. The key is to have plenty of chain as the bottom is a mix of seagrass & sand.

Toli Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a lovely spot to drop anchor for a peaceful lunch and a refreshing swim. The calm conditions make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Turkogyali Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: While the bottom slopes up a bit too quickly near the beach and rocks, and some tourist boats pass through, creating small, unpleasant waves, the beautiful little canyon behind the anchorage definitely makes up for it.

Maroni Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay is a stunner, but finding a sandy spot to anchor can be a challenge. The seaweed isn’t ideal for holding. We dropped anchor in 15m of crystal clear water and used 60m of chain to ensure a secure hold near the shoreline. Despite the anchor drama, it’s a peaceful and utterly gorgeous spot.

Saint Emilianos Church Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is a great spot for a few hours, provided the wind stays calm. You might need to adjust your lines a bit to find the perfect spot. We opted to moor with shore ends at the island, and it’s worth noting that you’ll need a long line – 60m for a secure hold.

Lapathos Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: Fantastic anchorage, crystal clear waters! It is accessible by boat. This place is truly breathtaking!

Panormitis Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: Panormitis is a beautiful anchorage, nestled within stunning scenery and offering a fantastic view of the impressive monastery. We anchored in 5m, but on the second day, the wind shifted and a yacht dragged anchor. They were able to re-anchor successfully.

Marathounda Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a lovely bay, and we enjoyed three days here. The south side offers the option of anchoring with lines ashore, while the north side has three buoys. The two red buoys are suitable for larger boats, while the white buoy has a thin line. Anchoring held well in 9m, but be warned, the wind can suddenly whip up to 30 knots at night.

Sabina Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is incredibly deep, requiring us to stern to some rocks. The bay is picturesque and perfect for a day stop, but we wouldn’t recommend staying overnight. Strong gusts from the north, reaching 22 knots, kept us up all night. We dropped anchor in 12m, but the wind shifted and caused the anchor to drag after only three hours. Only after deploying 55m of chain in 15m of water did the anchor hold securely. Despite the anchor issues, the bay is stunning with crystal clear water.

Saint George Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a breathtaking bay, with high cliffs framing a pebbly beach. A sand ledge runs about 90m from the beach, offering depths from 6-8m, which allows you to get within 30m of the shore. We anchored in 7m of water on the sand. The echo in the heart of the cliffs is truly impressive. There are also several great climbing areas in the vicinity.

Kaiki Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a good anchorage with solid holding. However, there are now more mooring buoys for local boats on the southwest side, so the space between the concrete pier and the south coast is more limited. We held well in mud at 14m, using 70m of chain, even in gusts exceeding 40 KT. However, we observed other boats struggling to set their anchors, and some did drag.

Agia Marina Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a beautiful bay, tucked between a beach and a small islet. We anchored in 4m of water, using 60m of chain and med-moored to the islet. The water is crystal clear, and you can easily swim to the islet and admire the charming little church.

Marinas & Ports: Anchoring in Symi's Embrace

Symi’s main port, Gialos, is a vibrant tapestry of neoclassical buildings and bustling taverns. Here, the boats bob gently alongside, their sails a symphony of colour against the cerulean sky. It’s the perfect spot to stock up on provisions or simply soak in the lively atmosphere. Just a short hop away, the charming port of Pedi, with its traditional, colourful houses, offers a more relaxed setting. And for those seeking a truly secluded haven, the sheltered harbour of Panormitis, guarded by the imposing Monastery of Archangel Michael, is a must-visit. You can’t help but feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret hideaway, straight out of an ancient myth.

Anchorages & Beaches: Unveiling Symi's Hidden Gems

Forget the crowded beaches of the mainland! Symi island offers a bounty of secluded coves and hidden anchorages, each more enchanting than the last. The crystal-clear waters beckon you to dive in, while the pebbled beaches provide the perfect spot for a lazy afternoon. Nestled between towering cliffs, the secluded bay of Agios Nikolaos is a true sanctuary. Or perhaps you fancy the beauty of Nimos, a crescent-shaped beach perfect for snorkeling and swimming with playful dolphins. Just remember, Poseidon's mischievous moods can sometimes make anchoring tricky, so keep an eye on the weather.

Symi in Greece: More Than Just Sailing

Beyond the azure waters, Symi island boasts a fascinating history, woven into its very fabric. Ascend the iconic "Kastro" (castle), perched high above Gialos, and you'll be greeted by breathtaking panoramas and whispers of a rich Byzantine past. This island is a treasure trove of ancient ruins, charming villages, and authentic tavernas, promising a culinary adventure that will tantalize your taste buds. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a curious traveller, Symi's allure is undeniable.
