A Skipper's Guide to Thasos Greece

Set sail around Thasos, the Emerald Isle of the North Aegean, and envision yourself as a contemporary Argonaut on a quest for maritime wonders. Instead of mythical creatures, you’ll encounter a seascape of unparalleled beauty. This Greek gem, nestled in the embracing arms of the Aegean Sea, is a sailor’s paradise. Thasos boasts a coastline that seems divinely crafted, with its hidden inlets, secluded shores, and waters so clear they rival the mythical tears of Aphrodite. As you navigate its cerulean waters, keep watch for playful dolphins that may join your odyssey. Each nautical mile reveals new marvels, from lush green hills cascading to the sea to ancient ruins whispering tales of bygone eras. Thasos, holds its own unique allure in the tapestry of Greek islands, offering sailors an enchanting blend of natural splendor and rich history.

Thasos Anchorages Overview

Thasos Port

Port
This is what sailors experienced: We enjoyed a peaceful stay in this port at the end of June, everything wonderfully straightforward. However, one night we experienced a moderate east wind around 10 knots, which created a surprisingly large swell. Depth was consistently 4m throughout the port, except for the entrance channel which had a depth of just 2.7m.

Acropolis of Thasos Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay offered excellent holding and was remarkably well-protected from southerly winds. While the fishermen advised keeping an eye out for potential northerly gusts overnight, we had the entire bay to ourselves and enjoyed a peaceful night. The swimming was truly wonderful!

Makryammos Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is a gem! It’s both quiet and stunningly beautiful. There’s a friendly beach bar offering snacks, cold drinks, and a warm welcome.

Porto Vathi Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This spot is perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying at the beach restaurant with a refreshing drinks & cocktails. The food is tasty, and the service is decent.

Vathi Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: Great place for anchoring & relaxing. IMPORTANT NOTE: for anyone who wants to visit the Vathy beach for free, WITHOUT paying anything to the hotel, be informed that the Greek law and constitution protects you. Vathi Beach is a public beach protected by Greek law. Do not let the hotel located here prevent you.

Golden Sand Western Bay

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage, nestled in a more tranquil and verdant setting than the one near bustling Golden Beach, offers a peaceful retreat. We dropped anchor in 5m of sand, with the option of bringing a mooring line ashore if needed.

Golden Sand Marina / Pier

Marina / Pier
This is what sailors experienced: This is a truly lovely spot, boasting stunning views of the lush green mountains. The water itself is a beautiful green hue. We anchored in 4m of depth, finding ourselves a little removed from the lively tavernas and bars of the main areas, offering a peaceful retreat. While the beaches are lovely and close by, the pier wall doesn’t offer much protection against waves and swell from the east.

Golden Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a truly delightful and peaceful anchorage. The water is crystal clear, with a sandy bottom, and excellent holding at 5-6m. On calm days, the wind tends to follow the sun, shifting from easterly in the morning to westerly in the evening. The entire shoreline is lined with lovely sandy beaches, both organized and wild, offering a variety of options.

Skala Potamias Old Port

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This is a tiny harbour, primarily for fishermen, with very limited space for visiting boats. The entrance is exceptionally shallow, sometimes dropping below a meter, so proceed with caution. There’s only one channel with slightly deeper water, but it’s still shallow. We managed to find a small spot to park our dinghy and head into town, but it was a real squeeze. When entering with your dinghy, stay to the starboard side, and the clear water makes it easy to see the bottom.

Paralia Chrisi Akti

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a truly idyllic spot, offering peace and quiet, crystal clear waters, and pristine sand – perfect for family holidays. It’s considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. A plaque depicting Poseidon, the god of the sea, adds a touch of mythology to the scene, while the views are simply breathtaking.

Krambousa Island

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a rocky anchorage with deep water, making it ideal for larger vessels. There’s a small dock wall for convenient dinghy drop-off. The views from this location are truly spectacular, with a charming chapel perched on the island, adding to the picturesque setting.
Thasos Island: Where the waters are crystal clear and the beaches are pristine.

A Sailor's Haven: Marinas & Ports of Thasos

Forget the mythical Argo, your vessel will find solace in Thasos’s welcoming marinas. The main port of Limenas, where the mythical giant, Thasos, is said to have settled, buzzes with life and offers all the amenities a sailor could desire. Skala Prinos, located on the northeast coast, is a charming fishing village with a picturesque harbour, perfect for escaping the crowds. Other marinas like Aliki, Potos, and Limenaria, each with their own unique charm, provide a safe haven for your ship.

Hidden Gems:
Anchorages & Beaches of Thasos Island

Like the Argonauts seeking the Golden Fleece, you'll discover hidden treasures in Thasos's coves and beaches. Anchoring in Giola, a natural pool carved from the cliffs, is a must-do for any sailor, while Paradise Beach, with its pristine white sand and turquoise waters, lives up to its name. Other secluded anchorages like Makryammos and Maries, each offering a taste of paradise, await your discovery.
