This is what sailors experienced:
This marina has a strict draft limit of 1.5 meters, making it inaccessible to deeper-hulled vessels. We opted to anchor just outside the harbour entrance, which unfortunately proved to be quite a rolly spot. The seabed rises dramatically from 50 meters to a mere 8 meters within a very short distance, creating a constant rocking motion. On the plus side, the town is very welcoming to visiting boats, allowing you to completely disembark and explore without any hassle.
This is what sailors experienced:
Anchored in the center of the outer harbour, in about 13 feet of water, using a heavy anchor to minimize swing. The seabed was a mix of sand and rock. It was a very still night and we slept soundly. There was minimal noise from the nearby roads.
This is what sailors experienced:
This was a great stopover during my recent trip! I was able to spend a few days in the small harbour, even though it’s technically off-limits to boaters. After a friendly chat with a policeman, he allowed me to stay until Sunday morning, which was my planned departure. The other pier is quite exposed to swell, making it less than ideal for anchoring.
The coastline surrounding Xylokastro is a treasure trove of breathtaking beaches and secluded coves, perfect for dropping anchor and enjoying a peaceful escape from the bustling world. From the golden sands of the main beach to the hidden coves nestled amongst the rocks, every beach offers a unique experience. As you swim in the crystal-clear waters, imagine the nymphs and goddesses of Greek mythology playfully dancing among the waves, reminding you of the magical allure of this enchanting region.
Xylokastro itself is a captivating town, steeped in history and culture. Wander through the charming streets lined with traditional houses, adorned with colorful bougainvillea, and discover the remnants of ancient fortifications, whispers of a time long past. Take a stroll along the lively harbour front, where the scent of fresh seafood and the cheerful chatter of locals fill the air. And don't miss the opportunity to explore the surrounding hills, where you can uncover ancient ruins, hike through picturesque landscapes, and enjoy panoramic views of the sparkling Aegean.
