Kalamos, the “Island of Reeds,” isn’t just a speck on the map; it’s a mythical paradise tucked away in the Ionian Sea. Legend says Poseidon himself sculpted this island, creating dramatic cliffs that plunge into turquoise waters, secret coves that whisper tales of ancient mariners, and lush hills that echo with the laughter of nymphs. Sailing around Kalamos island is like stepping into an epic poem, where every gust of wind carries the spirit of Odysseus and every wave holds the promise of adventure. So, unfurl your sails, adjust your captain’s hat, and prepare to be enchanted by Kalamos’s siren song!

Returning to this beautiful spot for the second time, we were met with a rather boisterous welcome. A brisk north-easterly wind, blowing a force 5, greeted us as we entered the harbour. Ever the helpful host, George expertly guided us to our anchor spot. However, the wind persisted throughout the night, reaching force 5-6, creating a symphony of creaking hulls and a rather rolly experience.
This is what sailors experienced:
Nestled in a quaint village, this small marina offers space for around 10 sailing boats along its quay, with ample depth for a comfortable stay. For those who prefer a little more elbow room, the area outside the harbour provides excellent anchorage for numerous boats to swing freely. Swimmers beware: the harbour waters can be a bit odorous, so anchoring outside is recommended for a more refreshing dip.

This secluded haven offers a slice of paradise for a peaceful lunch break, refreshing swim, or a tranquil overnight stay, provided the weather cooperates. With space for just one boat, it’s the perfect escape from the crowds. We dropped anchor in the sandy bottom at about 7m depth, finding ample swinging room away from the submerged rock. The serenity of the surroundings convinced us to stay the night, enjoying the quiet solitude under the stars.

A perfect escape! This idyllic spot proved ideal for a refreshing swim and leisurely lunch break, offering complete solitude as we were the only boat in sight. The seabed drops off quickly, so don’t hesitate to anchor close to the beach for the best experience.
This is what sailors experienced:
A stunning location, we had the entire cove to ourselves for the night. However, the beauty came with a bit of a bumpy ride as we experienced significant swell. Our anchor dragged a bit, but by staying in the middle of the cove with depths ranging from 7-10m, we remained secure.

This delightful little bay proved to be a fantastic spot for a refreshing swim. Anchoring in 7m of water over a mix of sand and weed, we were greeted by crystal-clear, blue-green water, far from the rubbish mentioned in previous reviews. A true gem for a peaceful dip and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings.
This is what sailors experienced:
When approaching or navigating the northern part of the beach, be aware of the rocks located approximately 90m from the shore. Take care to avoid this hazard and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

While Poseidon may have favored anchoring in secluded coves, modern-day sailors have a few more options for resting their weary vessels. The main port of Kalamos, also named Kalamos, offers a safe harbour with basic amenities, like water and fuel. Just across the strait on the mainland, the charming port of Mytikas provides a taste of authentic Greek life with tavernas overflowing with fresh seafood and friendly locals eager to share a glass (or two) of ouzo. For those seeking a bit more luxury, the nearby island of Lefkada boasts several modern marinas with all the bells and whistles, ensuring your ship is pampered like a god.
Kalamos is an island of hidden treasures, and its beaches and anchorages are no exception. Asprogiali beach, with its smooth white pebbles and crystal-clear waters, is a haven for sunbathers and snorkelers alike. Further north, the secluded bay of Kefali offers a tranquil escape, where you can drop anchor and listen to the whispers of the wind through the cypress trees. And for those seeking a touch of the dramatic, the cave of Papanikolis, rumored to have sheltered a legendary Greek submarine during World War II, promises an adventure worthy of Poseidon himself.
