Sailing the Mythical Realm of Kythera:
Where Aphrodite Emerged & Sailors Rejoice

Embarking on a sailing journey around Kythera Island in Greece is akin to setting sail on a mythical odyssey through the Ionian Sea. With its rugged coastlines, pristine beaches, and enchanting landscapes steeped in history and mythology, Kythera offers sailors a captivating experience unlike any other. From the azure waters of the Mediterranean to the vibrant culture of the island, every moment spent navigating these waters feels like a page out of Homer’s epic tales.

Kythera Island Anchorages Overview

Marina Agia Pelagia

Marina / Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:

The depth here accommodates sailing vessels with a draft of up to 2m, with the water depth measuring at 2.5m. We opted to moor alongside, where access to both water and electricity is available. For those in need of amenities, a short stroll to the mini-market approximately 400m away provides access to essential services, including obtaining a card. Remarkably, mooring is free of charge, and the presence of only a few boats enhances the tranquility of the spot.

Marina Kapsali

Marina
This is what sailors experienced: The heater and electricity tower are situated on the opposite side of the pier, requiring lengthy cables and pipes for access. Additionally, the setup initially provides only one connection point, with two clustered together later on, rendering them impractical unless you possess cables or pipes exceeding 20 meters in length. However, the sand offers excellent stability, and the beach is known for its friendly atmosphere.

Avelomonos Anchorage

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This spot serves as a viable option when the outer harbour is full. The seabed boasts good quality, providing a comfortable anchorage during calm weather conditions.

Diakofti Anchorage

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: Unfortunately, our attempts were futile as what appeared to be sand turned out to be rippled rock beneath the surface. After encountering this obstacle, we retraced our route to the south, feeling disheartened by the wasted fuel expended in our endeavor. Although we spotted another boat successfully anchored nearby, our efforts to secure a hold were unsuccessful. With strong winds forecasted, we aimed to ensure our safety and security.

Paralia Platia Ammos

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage serves as a convenient stopover for sailors journeying from the Ionian to the Aegean Sea. Despite encountering gusty westerly winds reaching up to 30 knots, we found the sand seabed offered excellent holding in 9 meters of water, with our anchor setting securely with ease. As we visited early in the season, we enjoyed the solitude of being the sole occupants of the anchorage, although it’s worth noting that the nearby restaurants were still closed during our stay. Accessing the shore via dinghy was straightforward, with the town wall providing a convenient point for docking.

Limnionas Beach

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: Nestled on the western side of the island, this bay exudes both importance and romance, particularly when winds blow from the west or south. As you venture deeper into its embrace during strong winds and waves from the west, you’ll find the bay’s narrow expanse adds an extra layer of intimacy to your experience. Utilizing shore lines or the mooring line, often found unused at the bottom closer to local boats, is essential for secure anchoring. While the bottom features a mix of stones and sand, we found that the anchor only held securely on the second attempt. When the wind intensifies, it’s imperative to ensure adequate chain length or attach a riding weight for added stability.
