Folegandros, a gem nestled in the Cyclades Archipelago, beckons sailors with its enchanting charm. This island, named after the mythical giant Polyphēmos, promises an adventure for the senses. Imagine crystal-clear waters, sculpted by the winds of the Aegean, beckoning you to dive in. Imagine quaint villages, whitewashed houses clinging to volcanic cliffs, whispering tales of ancient gods. Imagine sunsets that paint the sky in fiery hues, leaving you speechless as you sip your ouzo on deck. Folegandros is a sailor’s dream, offering a perfect blend of serenity and adventure.
This is what sailors experienced:
We secured our mooring at the quay with the assistance of the harbour master, who, while perhaps not a chatterbox (likely due to a language barrier), was undeniably pleasant and incredibly helpful. Our anchor held firm, providing us a secure and comfortable stay in the middle of the quay. The water depth at this location was a comfortable 4.5 meters near the quay.
Folegandros offers a selection of marinas and ports for your nautical respite. The main port, Chora, is a picturesque haven with ample space for larger vessels. It’s a vibrant hub where you can experience the island’s authentic spirit. For smaller boats, the charming harbour of Karavostasi, with its welcoming tavernas, offers a more intimate experience. And for those seeking a peaceful anchorage, Agali, located in the island’s north, promises solitude amidst the untouched beauty of nature.
From the crystal-clear waters of Agali to the breathtaking cliffs of Katergo, Folegandros's anchorages and beaches are a sailor's paradise. Livadaki, a secluded haven, boasts white sand and turquoise waters. Agios Nikolaos, a hidden gem on the island's west coast, offers a secluded escape with its pristine waters. Ano Mera, with its pebble beaches and breathtaking views, is ideal for a leisurely swim or a romantic picnic. Don't forget to explore the hidden coves and bays scattered around the island, each offering a unique perspective on Folegandros's raw beauty.
Folegandros, a haven of tranquility and natural wonder, whispers tales of ancient gods and a simpler time. The island's rich history, evident in its charming villages and ancient ruins, will transport you to a bygone era. The vibrant culture, reflected in the warm hospitality of the locals and the delectable flavors of traditional cuisine, will leave you wanting more. Folegandros is a place where time slows down, where the rhythm of life is set by the gentle lapping of the waves and the chirping of cicadas. It's a place where you can reconnect with yourself, with nature, and with the essence of Greece.
Stroll scenic Chora, hike to Panagia church for sunset views, boat to Katergo and Livadaki, and swim around Agali–Galifos–Agios Nikolaos beaches.
No airport; reach via ferries from Piraeus and seasonal links from Santorini, Naxos, Paros, and Milos. Yachts use Karavostasis port; approach with care in Meltemi.
Meltemi (N–NE) can be strong. Best shelter is Karavostasis but it can roll with northerly swell. South bays are exposed; anchor on sand patches and avoid rock. Water/fuel are limited—arrange at the quay.
Choose Chora for views and dining, or Karavostasis for easy ferry access. Book early for July–August and confirm hotel transfers.
Buses link port–Chora–beaches; trails are sun-exposed so carry water. Dress modestly at Panagia. Card acceptance can be limited in small tavernas.
