Ios Island Greece Weather
Sailing around Ios Island Greece is like navigating a playground for the gods! The wind whips through your hair as you cruise past dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters beckoning you to dive in, and hidden coves whisper tales of ancient myths. From the bustling harbour of Chora to the secluded beaches of Manganari, every corner of Ios brims with adventure. And let’s not forget the legendary nightlife that makes this island famous – prepare to dance under the Cycladic stars until the sun rises again!
This is what sailors experienced:
This is a pleasant anchorage with good sand holding at around 6-8m. We spent two nights here with a fairly strong N/NW wind. The anchorage was a bit rolly due to the N/NW swell wrapping around the corner. There’s good dinghy access in the northern corner with a small wall, old steel pegs, and rings.
Beyond the ports, Ios Island is a treasure trove of secluded anchorages and breathtaking beaches. The crystal-clear waters of Mylopotas are perfect for swimming and sunbathing, while the golden sands of Koumbara invite you to relax and unwind. For those seeking adventure, the dramatic cliffs of Psathi offer challenging climbs and stunning views, while the hidden coves of Agia Theodoti beckon with their serene beauty. Remember, though, that even the most secluded beaches on Ios have a touch of the island's vibrant nightlife. So, be prepared to dance under the stars, even if you're just anchoring for a night!
Beyond the beaches and nightlife, Ios Island has a rich history and culture waiting to be explored. Visit the ancient ruins of Skarkos, a prehistoric settlement, and delve into the myths and legends that have shaped the island. Wander through the whitewashed streets of Chora, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the island's vibrant atmosphere. And of course, no trip to Ios is complete without indulging in the island's delicious cuisine. From fresh seafood to traditional Greek dishes, your taste buds will be tantalized by the flavors of Ios.
Explore Chora’s lanes, swim at Mylopotas and Magganari, take boat trips to south coves, and visit Homer’s Tomb at Plakotos.
No airport; ferries run from Piraeus and from Santorini, Naxos, Paros, and Mykonos in season. Yachts mainly use Ormos Iou (Gialos) with good access to Chora.
Meltemi (N-NW) can be strong. Best shelter is Ormos Iou; Mylopotas and south bays are exposed in northerlies. Sand with weed patches—check holding. Fuel/water available by arrangement at the quay.
Stay near Chora/Gialos for convenience and nightlife, or choose Mylopotas or Magganari for beaches. Book early July–August and confirm transfers.
Use the island bus for beaches; roads are narrow. Carry water on hikes and respect church/monastery dress codes. Avoid anchoring on seagrass.
