This small, wild, and wonderfully sheltered bay offers a haven of tranquility. Anchoring is possible in 8-10 meters of water, with a mix of sandy and paved bottoms interspersed with Posidonia meadows.

This is what sailors experienced: This is a solid anchorage, but it can get a bit crowded. With four boats already anchored when we arrived, finding a good position was a bit of a challenge. We ended up anchoring in 12 meters of water.

This is what sailors experienced: Holding: not great but okay after a few attempts, aim for the sand patches. As it is quite narrow and depending on the wind you will want to have a Landline. It‘s possible to tie off the beach using a big rock, not the trees. Very calm and calming, clear water, you can hardly see a house from here, all the stars out.

This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is a true gem, offering a glimpse of untouched nature. We were completely surrounded by unspoiled beauty, with not a single sign of civilization in sight. Goats grazed on the cliffs above us, the water was crystal clear, and we even spotted a small ray while snorkeling! The sand held well, and we anchored in 7 meters with 30 meters of chain. This bay is very well protected. A word of caution: Our charts were completely inaccurate regarding depth, so be sure to check your readings carefully.

This is what sailors experienced: This bay is lovely, but quite compact and sheltered from the swell. We eventually decided on the wider, more protected side of the bay for a more comfortable stay.

Gaidouromantra Beach

This is what sailors experienced: This bay boasts clear water and good holding in around 6 meters of sand. While it’s safe, it’s not the most comfortable spot when northerly winds gust up to 35 knots, as the swell wraps around the rocks and enters the bay. It’s worth noting that sonar charts seem to be inaccurate – we found ourselves anchored in 6 meters instead of the chart’s indicated 1 meter. This means you can get much closer to the beach than expected!

What are the best anchorages and highlights on Kythnos?

Kolona–Fikiadha (iconic sandbar), Loutra (small marina & hot springs), Merichas (port), Agios Dimitrios (south), and Kanala/Episkopi in settled weather.

How do I get to Kythnos?

No airport; ferries from Piraeus/Lavrio to Merichas. Private boats can base at Merichas or Loutra and hop around west, south, and east bays.

Skipper tip: winds, shelter, and facilities?

Meltemi (N–NE) accelerates in the Kea–Kythnos channel. Best all-round shelter is Merichas; Loutra offers limited berths, water/power. Kolona rolls in northerlies—use long lines and avoid seagrass. Check gusts off high ridges and shoals near Fikiadha.

Where should I stay on Kythnos?

Loutra for marina and spa vibe, Merichas for port access and dining, or Chora/Dryopida for traditional lanes. Book early for weekends and August.

Any extra travel or culture tips?

Carry water for hikes; roads can be rough. Respect church dress codes and the protected sandbar at Kolona; keep drones away from settlements.
