This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage is truly magical. We arrived early and anchored outside the main inlet, where many day boats were already anchored or on buoys. Using our dinghy, we explored three stunning bays and five to six massive caves, making this a truly unique experience. Overnight anchoring is highly recommended as the bay is well protected from all winds except an easterly.

Provata Beach

This is what sailors experienced: This beautiful, expansive bay offers calm waters and excellent protection from northerly winds, even when they sweep across the anchorage. While it’s open to the south, swell can make it rolly even without wind. Anchor well away from the buoys and the few day charter boats on a solid 4-5m sandy bottom. The crystal-clear waters make it ideal for swimming, and two sandy beaches are easily accessible by dinghy.

Firiplaka Beach

This is what sailors experienced: This anchorage boasts excellent anchor hold on a sandy bottom, surrounded by breathtaking rocky shores. The crystal-clear waters add to the beauty. Despite its charm, it seems to be a less popular spot. While we experienced a minor swell from the south and a light easterly wind overnight, it was still a very enjoyable experience.

Tsigrado Beach

This is what sailors experienced: We enjoyed a peaceful night here, arriving at 7pm in high season after the last charter boats had left. The vast bay to the west held only two boats, and the eastern bay just one. It wasn’t until 8:30am the next morning that the first small rental boats arrived. The excellent sand bottom provided great holding.

This is what sailors experienced: This is a lovely spot tucked at the foot of white cliffs, with incredibly clear turquoise water and a beautiful sandy bottom. While the main attraction is a small cave, it draws quite a crowd. The real highlight is the bubbling water that emerges from the sand near the cave, a unique and fascinating phenomenon.

This is what sailors experienced: This is a great spot for a day stop. We anchored in 5m of water, mostly sand, but with rocks closer to the beach. Don’t be afraid to go deeper near the beach to explore. The wind tends to curve around the point, so a northerly wind inside the bay actually had us facing a northeast wind, with our stern towards the beach. This is a fantastic location for photography, with lots of interesting abandoned buildings and caves.

This is what sailors experienced: This is a truly amazing spot, especially when the wind is light and from the south. The nearby village is easily accessible by dinghy, and the surrounding area is full of breathtaking caves. We were even lucky enough to see two turtles! There’s also a fantastic restaurant nearby, overlooking the sea with a wonderful atmosphere.

Tourkothalassa Beach

This is what sailors experienced: This is a great anchorage, we spent two nights here. It’s a convenient spot for dinghy trips to Sarakiniko, and we enjoyed a delicious meal at Medusa restaurant, with great service. We used the dinghy to reach the pier to the north and a local fisherman helped us find a safe spot. Be aware the water is shallow, so raise your motor after clearing the rocks. For the best anchor hold, aim for the sandy bottom, which is visible on Google Maps.

While it’s open to the northwest, it’s otherwise quite well-protected, especially when anchored behind the northern rock. This is what sailors experienced: This is a truly beautiful anchorage, nestled near a charming, colorful village, dramatic cliffs, and the picturesque town of Adamas above. After a long day of sailing, we were excited to anchor here, but unfortunately, we found it difficult to secure to the buoy or drop anchor. Additionally, we were told to leave by locals, likely because they didn’t want a boat interrupting their view. We ultimately decided to move on and anchored at a nearby spot around the corner of the island.

Adamas (main base), south-coast lee at Provatas and Paliochori, Kleftiko as a day stop in settled weather, west bays at Triades/Agios Ioannis, and fair-weather Pollonia; Polyaigos is a top nearby day trip.

How do I get to Milos?

Fly to MLO (Athens connections) or take ferries from Piraeus/Cyclades. Yachts typically base in Adamas and circuit south/west anchorages weather-permitting.

Skipper tip: winds, shelter, and facilities?

Meltemi (N-NE) is strong: Adamas is the best all-round shelter; north coast is rough in northerlies while south coves are calmer. Kleftiko is daytime only; mind reefs/caves. Sand with rock/weed patches; fuel/water/power available at Adamas quay.

Where should I stay on Milos?

Adamas for port access, Plaka for views, Pollonia for a quieter beach base. Book early July–September and confirm transfers/parking.

Any extra travel or culture tips?

Respect sea-cave limits and protected zones; avoid anchoring on seagrass. Local caiques share popular coves—keep clear. Carry shade/water; drones may be restricted.
