Kiato: More than just a sail, it’s an epic journey.
Ah, Kiato! The very name conjures images of sun-drenched sails, crystal-clear waters, and a mythical past that whispers on the wind. This charming corner of Greece, nestled on the northeastern shores of the Peloponnese, offers sailors a delightful blend of ancient history, stunning natural beauty, and the warmest of Greek hospitality. Imagine yourself, like Odysseus, navigating the azure waters, but instead of sirens, you’ll find friendly locals and delectable tavernas. With a tapestry of secluded bays, picturesque harbours, and charming islands to explore, a sailing adventure around Kiato is a voyage for the senses.
This is what sailors experienced:
This small harbour is a good option for a short stopover, especially during this time of year(May). Although officially off-limits to boaters, I was able to stay a few days after a friendly discussion with a local policeman. He understood my need to stay until Sunday morning, my planned departure. The other pier, however, is quite challenging due to the significant swell.
Kiato boasts a diverse array of marinas and ports, each catering to the unique needs of the adventurous sailor. The main hub, the Port of Kiato, buzzes with activity, offering a range of services, from provisioning and fuel to repair and maintenance. For those seeking a more secluded haven, the charming marina of Loutraki, just a short sail away, provides a tranquil escape with stunning views of the Corinthian Gulf. And for those looking to truly embrace the spirit of adventure, venturing further afield to the smaller harbours of Xylokastro and Perachora offers a taste of authentic Greek life.
For those seeking a touch of isolation and the serenity of nature, Kiato offers an abundance of picturesque anchorages and secluded beaches. Imagine dropping anchor in the turquoise waters of the Kalamaki Bay, where the ancient ruins of the temple of Poseidon stand watch over the shore. Or bask in the tranquility of the hidden cove of Agios Nikolaos, where the only sound is the gentle lapping of waves against the golden sand. And for the truly adventurous, explore the unspoiled beauty of the island of Agistri, a haven of olive groves, charming villages, and crystal-clear waters.
Beyond the seas, Kiato is a treasure trove of history and culture. Walk in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks at the ruins of the ancient city of Kleonai, gaze upon the impressive Corinth Canal, a marvel of engineering, or delve into the myths and legends of the nearby ancient city of Corinth, where the story of the mythical hero, Perseus, unfolds. In the evenings, savor traditional Greek cuisine in the lively tavernas, enjoy the vibrant nightlife, or simply unwind in the warm embrace of Greek hospitality.
Walk the seafront promenade, swim at the town beaches, enjoy fish tavernas, and day-trip to ancient Sicyon or Nemea wineries.
From Athens, take the Proastiakos suburban train to Kiato or drive via the A8; by sea, approach along the Gulf of Corinth.
Afternoon westerlies can build chop; the quay offers decent shelter. Med-moor stern-to with your own anchor; water and shore power seasonally.
Beachfront apartments and small hotels line the promenade—book weekends and peak summer in advance.
Combine with a visit to Corinth Canal and the ruins of Sicyon; evenings are lively along the paralia with cafés and gelaterias.
