Spetses Island Anchorages Overview

Spetses Port

Marina
This is what sailors experienced: This marina offers basic amenities like water and electricity, and the staff is friendly and helpful. However, the close proximity of boats can be a challenge, especially during busy periods. We found ourselves with limited space and experienced some interference from neighboring boats. The strong wash from ferries and taxi boats is a serious concern, creating a potentially dangerous situation. While it’s a convenient stop, I’d recommend avoiding it unless you can secure a spot with ample space and are prepared for the strong currents.

Old Port of Spetses

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: We received a warm welcome from the owner of Mourayo. A helpful man in a small boat assisted us in securing our boat, making the arrival process easy and pleasant.

Ligoneri Anchorage

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a fantastic anchorage! The crystal clear water is a huge plus, and the protection from the southwest swell and wind is excellent thanks to the trees and natural shelter. It’s also great that you’re far enough away from the busy taxi boats and ferries to enjoy a peaceful stay. The good holding in sand, with clear water allowing you to avoid the occasional large rocks, makes for easy anchoring. Highly recommended!

Lovers Cove Bay

Bay
This is what sailors experienced: This is a truly idyllic spot! The incredible water quality makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring the underwater world. It’s also an ideal location for simply relaxing and enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature. A true hidden gem!

Paralia Zogerias

Bay

This is what sailors experienced:
This bay is a great option for escaping southerly winds, offering ample space even during the busy weekend season. However, it’s worth noting that even a gentle swell from the north can make for a restless night. Despite the potential for a bit of rocking, it’s still a good option for those seeking a protected haven, especially with the availability of space.

Saint Paraskevi Beach

Bay

This is what sailors experienced:
We enjoyed a peaceful stay in this charming bay, anchored in 8 meters of water. While there are some sandy patches, be mindful of the rocks present. We took advantage of the calm waters for a swim and lunch, finding the beach pleasantly uncrowded. A charming little church adds to the picturesque scenery.

Bekiri's Cave

Bay / Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This bay is a gem! We enjoyed a fantastic snorkeling experience with crystal-clear water. We were the only two boats in mid-June, providing a tranquil escape after a long journey. The sunset was breathtaking, making for a perfect evening and overnight stay. The rocky bottom requires careful anchoring, but we found good holding in a sandy patch after a couple of attempts. We also took the opportunity to explore the nearby cave by swimming, adding to the adventure.

Paralia Xilokeriza Bay

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This bay is a great option, especially if the wind isn’t blowing from the south. We ventured deep into the right side of the bay, anchoring at 7m, with the shoreline conveniently nearby. We enjoyed a peaceful overnight stay, all alone – a truly wonderful experience.

Azastano Anchorage

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This is a beautiful, small bay, perfect for an overnight stay. We anchored on the east side, using stern lines and 75m of chain. The anchor found good holding in the sand, giving us peace of mind. The clear water was a bonus, adding to the enjoyment of this picturesque spot.

Kouzounos Beach

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
We found ourselves seeking shelter in this bay, anchoring with 25m of chain in 4m of water, waiting for the north wind to strengthen overnight. The solitude was palpable, making for a truly tranquil experience. The bottom was mostly sand, with a few flat rocks scattered about.

Paralia Agia Marina

Anchorage

This is what sailors experienced:
This is a lovely bay, but be sure to carefully search for a sandy spot to anchor. We found a sandy patch at 7m, but discovered upon diving that the surrounding area was mostly sharp rock, not the sandy bottom we initially thought.

Paralia Garifalos

Anchorage
This is what sailors experienced: This is a charming, small anchorage, conveniently located within a short walk of the town. However, be aware that conditions can become very rough in this bay, especially with limited space and a rocky central area. We left our dinghy on the beach and had a pleasant 18-minute walk to town.

Spetses: A Greek island of charm, history, and endless possibilities

Porting In: Your Spetses Pit Stops

Spetses offers several options for weary sailors, each with its own charm. The main harbour, Dapia, is a bustling hub of activity, with restaurants, shops, and a vibrant nightlife. For a more secluded experience, head to Kosta Marina, tucked away in a quiet cove. And for a touch of history, the old port of Spetses, with its charming old buildings, is a must-visit. Don’t forget to check out the “marina” at the Spetses Club, a historic haven for yacht owners, boasting an array of amenities and a legendary social scene. Remember, as the ancient Greek proverb goes, “A good sailor never gets lost,” and with these ports, you’ll be well-equipped for your Spetses adventure.

Anchoring Away: Secluded Splendor

Beyond the ports, Spetses offers a wealth of secluded anchorages, perfect for escaping the crowds and finding your own slice of paradise. The sheltered coves of Agios Mamas and Agios Nikolaos are popular choices, offering stunning views and crystal-clear waters. Don't miss the opportunity to drop anchor near Zogeria beach, a haven for families and watersport enthusiasts. Remember, as Poseidon, god of the sea, would say, "The best journeys are those off the beaten path," and Spetses has plenty to offer the adventurous soul.

Beyond the Boats: Spetses Island Life

Spetses, a haven of history and charm, has much to offer beyond its nautical allure. Stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets, admiring the neoclassical architecture and colorful bougainvillea. Learn about the island's rich maritime history, including its key role in the Greek War of Independence. In the evenings, soak up the lively atmosphere, from cozy cafes to buzzing bars. And if you're feeling adventurous, rent a horse-drawn carriage and take a romantic tour of the island. Remember, as the ancient Greeks believed, "Life is a journey, not a destination," and Spetses is the perfect place to embrace this timeless philosophy.
